Printable lined paper, ruled to the real standards

College, wide, and narrow rule at their true stationery measurements — 7.14, 8.73, and 6.35 mm — plus a 3-line handwriting practice rule with a dashed midline. Generated in your browser as vector geometry, sized in real millimeters, with no watermarks, no sign-ups, and nothing uploaded. Print it on paper or save it as a PDF from the same dialog.

How this generator works

The sheet you see is an SVG drawn in physical units: every rule sits at a real millimeter coordinate, not a screen pixel. The presets load the actual US stationery standards — college rule at 7.14 mm (9/32 in), wide at 8.73 mm (11/32 in), narrow at 6.35 mm (1/4 in) — and the page computes how many whole rows fit inside the printable area, the sheet minus your margin, centering them so the rules never crowd an edge. The handwriting preset switches to repeating three-line groups — solid top line, dashed midline, solid baseline, then a gap of half the rule height — fitting as many whole groups as the content area holds, and the optional left margin line lands at 31.75 mm (1.25 in) from the sheet edge, the standard stationery margin.

Printing is where most lined-paper sites quietly fail, because "Fit to page" rescales their fixed PDFs and a 7.14 mm college rule arrives at 6.7 mm. This page sets the print size to match your chosen sheet exactly and keeps the rules inside a 12.7 mm default margin — within the mechanical dead zone of essentially every consumer printer — so nothing needs rescaling. Leave the dialog at 100% or "Actual size" and the millimeters on paper match the millimeters on the readout; the methodology page shows how to verify with a ruler.

The honest limits: if your print dialog is set to fit, shrink, or scale, no generator can save the measurements — check that setting once and it stays checked. Line weights below about 0.2 mm may render inconsistently on consumer printers, which is why the default is 0.3 mm. And borderless edge-to-edge rules depend on printer hardware this page can't control, so the margin control stops at 5 mm rather than pretending zero works everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What does "college ruled" actually measure?
College rule puts lines 9/32 of an inch apart — exactly 7.14 mm, and that is the value the preset loads. Wide rule (sometimes sold as legal rule) is 11/32 in, or 8.73 mm, and narrow rule is 1/4 in, or 6.35 mm. These are the real US stationery standards, not rounded lookalikes — print at 100% and a ruler will confirm them.
Which rule should I use?
College rule is the everyday default for high school and university work — most US loose-leaf and composition books use it. Wide rule suits younger writers and anyone with larger handwriting, since the taller line height keeps letters legible. Narrow rule fits the most lines per page, which makes it the pick for dense notes and small handwriting.
What does the handwriting preset draw?
A 3-line practice rule: a solid top line, a dashed midline, and a solid baseline, repeated down the page with a gap of half the rule height between groups. The dashed midline is the teaching element — lowercase letters sit between the baseline and the midline, while capitals and ascenders reach toward the top line — so letter heights stay consistent while the shapes are being learned.
Will the line spacing really be exact when printed?
Yes — on one condition: the print dialog's scale must be 100% (sometimes labeled "Actual size"), not "Fit to page", which silently shrinks the sheet to dodge printer margins. The rules are generated in true millimeter units and kept inside a safe margin so nothing gets clipped, and a ruler on the first printout will confirm the spacing.
Is anything uploaded or stored?
No. The sheet is generated as vector geometry inside this page, printed through your browser's own dialog, and never exists anywhere but on your device. No account, no watermark, no stored settings — close the tab and it's gone.
